CABE has announced the results of its Healthy Hospitals campaign vote, asking the public to comment on inspirational ideas for a hospital environment.

Of the four teams of architects and designers asked to challenge conventional thinking and come up with inspirational ideas, Jane Darbyshire and David Kendall Ltd attracted the largest number of votes and comments with 52% of the votes cast. McDowell + Benedetti came second with 27%, MUF architecture/art were third with 12% and FAT received 9%.

The comments were varied and extensive. 95% of these respondents reacted positively to the designs, and to the idea of new approaches in hospital design.

83% of those who commented mentioned their own negative experiences of hospital environments. Comments included: ‘cold’, ‘depressing’, ‘dehumanising’, ‘impersonal’, ‘little natural light or air’, ‘designed to confuse’, ‘windowless’, ‘no privacy’.
